Project Brief

PMRCL Project Description:

Patna, the capital of Bihar, is one of the oldest cities in the world and is the centre of social, cultural, economic and political life of the State. It is an important business centre of Eastern India and also a gateway to the Buddhist and Jain pilgrimage centers of Vaishali, Rajgir, Nalanda, Bodhgaya and Pawapuri.

The City stretches for about 20 km along the south bank of the Ganges. The main railway station, airline offices and the airport are all at the Western side of the City, while the older and more traditional parts of Patna are on the Eastern side. The 'hub' of the new Patna is at Gandhi Maidan. The main market area is Ashok Rajpath which starts from Gandhi Maidan. The City has been growing rapidly due to large scale urbanization and economic activities.

A number of initiatives have been taken in recent years to improve the Transport

Infrastructure of the City and to provide better public transport facilities to the commuters. However, the growing need of commuters and city has led city planning agencies to plan and create additional infrastructure facilities to serve the future traffic needs. The sharing of limited right of way by a variety of modes and other utility services has resulted in traffic congestion, accidents, and inadequate parking area and environment deterioration.

A Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) was prepared in 2018 adhering to MoHUA

Guidelines. It identified various short, medium and long-term transport infrastructures in the City. CMP recommended mass transport systems along major travel corridors. The Government of Bihar has decided to introduce efficient, safe and high capacity public transport system in Patna.
